HEIC to JPG on Windows: 3 Ways That Actually Work
Windows has no native HEIC support. Double-click a .heic file and Photos will ask you to install a codec. Here are the methods that actually work, ordered from least to most painful.
Method 1: Install the HEIF codec from the Microsoft Store
Search the Microsoft Store for “HEIF Image Extensions” — it is free. Once installed, Photos can open HEIC files, and you can use Photos → Save as to export to JPG.
Honest drawbacks: the codec does not cover every HEIC variant — files from older iPhones and some Android phones can still refuse to open. And you need admin rights to install Store extensions, which kills this option on work machines.
Method 2: Convert in your browser

Honest drawbacks: HEIC decode in Chrome and Firefox runs through a WebAssembly decoder, which is slower than native decode and occasionally chokes on weird HEIC variants from older phones. - Your own PC, batch of family photos: Method 1 (codec) or 3 (iMazing) — fastest for hundreds of files.
- Work machine without admin rights: Method 2 — nothing to install.
- One stubborn file that will not open: try them in order; the failures are usually codec coverage, not the file.
And if you are still shooting in HEIC, you can dodge this whole problem: on your iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats → “Most Compatible.” Files are bigger, but they open everywhere.
